Thomas Wilmer studied law at the University of Heidelberg, where he acquired his doctor’s degree in 1996. Since 1994 he worked in the internet law area, where he was able to manage some of the first internet and e-commerce cases in Germany, amongst them the first internet court case “heidelberg.de”. In 2002 he became one of the first Professors for Information Law in Germany at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, where he is now also managing Director of the Institute for information Law and head of the study course “Global Licensing” LL.M.
Since 2009 Thomas Wilmer specialized as of counsel in the field of IT and IP Law focussing on the aim of combining legal, technical and economic aspects, e.g. in the fields of distribution law or IT Procurement. Moreover he was working in the area of IP Due Diligence, especially related to Open Source Software. He provided legal advice to national and international IT suppliers as well as to IT procurement divisions and was also able to introduce and support legal and contract / license management departments for clients. In the field of Data Protection he specialized on the handling of data protection audits, internet use and related e-mail archiving matters.
From 2006 on Thomas Wilmer was responsible for the certified education of information technology lawyers. Since October 2010 Thomas Wilmer is avocado counsel and part of the Practice Group "Intellectual Property, Competition & Communications". Thomas is distinguished through numerous publications and appearances as a speaker at seminars concerning IT and IP law and Data Protection matters.
